With the cold and wet weather creeping in, you are obviously going to want to make sure that your four-legged best friend is kept warm and dry whilst out and about and a dog coat is the perfect option. With a wide variety on the market, choosing the best coat for your dog can be daunting. We've decided to list some of the most common questions we get asked to help you get a better idea of what's best for your pup.
Which dog breeds need winter coats?
Not all dogs need to wear a dog coat all of the time. If you're still not sure if your dog falls into the category of needing a jacket, it's best to go by its breed. Small, toy breed dogs such as Chihuahuas, Miniature terriers and Pomeranians are more prone to feeling the chill due to their small stature. It's highly recommended that when the temperature drops that you get them wrapped up. If it is too cold for you outside and you need a coat, your small dog will probably need one too.
Dogs with a short coat or no coat at all most definitely need protection from the elements. Breeds such as Weimaraners have a very short coat and Chinese Crested dogs have only tufts of hair in certain places and are bald everywhere else. These dogs will also benefit from a jumper or sweater in the house in the autumn or winter months to help keep them warm.
If you own a Dachshund or a Corgi, you will also want to get them wrapped up. With their adorable little legs, they are closer to the ground so their body core won't stay as warm. They are more likely to get wet in the rain and snow and therefore end up colder.
Athletically built, thinner dogs such as whippets and lurchers will need that extra protection as they have finer coats, less body fat and are there for more likely to get cold a lot easier than most breeds.
At what temperature does a dog need a coat in the UK?
There isn't a set rule as to what temperature it should be for your dog to need a coat. All dogs are different. The weather will play a part - wet and windy weather can feel colder than a bright crisp day. If you are unsure, take your dog's coat with you in your bag and if you believe they are getting cold, you can always pop it on. Remember - this isn't a fashion accessory and should only be used when your dog needs that extra warmth.
Should my small dog wear a coat?
If you have a small, toy or miniature type dog and the weather is cold or wet, the answer is yes. With their dainty build, they will most definitely feel any wintery weather.
